The Rules

I know I've touched on most of these throughout several blog posts, but I wanted to put down all the rules in one place. My challenge for 2011 is to purchase more items from resale or thrift stores, and less direct from retail shops.

The 2011 Secondhand Challege Rules:

  • Clothing, accessories, jewelry, shoes can only be purchased through secondhand shops. "New" items from thrift stores or Ebay are okay, as long as they are being sold resale. For example, if I'm at Goodwill and I see a dress that still has tags from its original store I can buy that. Or, if I'm looking for a pair of jeans on Ebay, and I find a pair that's labeled NWT (new with tag), that someone is selling because they never wore them, that's fine, too.
  • Music can be purchased new through record stores or downloads...and does not apply to this challenge.
  • I can accept gifts of new items.
  • I can purchase new household items, as long as it's not home decor. For example, I can purchase a new kitchen sink, but if I want to buy some picture frames, they need to be from thrift stores.
  • Undergarments are exempt from the challenge, for obvious reasons.
We'll see if I can make it through 365 days without breaking the rules.
